With the increasing popularity of messaging apps, Facebook Messenger continues to be a prominent player. To enhance user experience, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, frequently introduces new features. Now, Meta has launched the ‘Communities’ feature in Messenger, allowing users to chat with up to 5,000 friends simultaneously.
Through this feature, users can join Messenger Communities and chat with others even if they are not part of the same Facebook group. While a standard Messenger group can only accommodate 250 members, Meta introduced Community Chats in Facebook Messenger back in 2022.
Recently, the company rolled out a new group chat feature in the app. This feature will gradually be available to all Messenger users. Any user can start a community, and similar to WhatsApp, admin features have been implemented to manage these communities.
How Admins Can Manage Messenger Communities
- Invite new members.
- Create community chats.
- Remove members from the community.
- Delete any chat within the community.
- Leave the community.
- Report content violations.
- Remove any content from the community chat.
According to technology news outlet TechCrunch, many users may benefit from this feature, as it allows messaging with up to 5,000 people simultaneously.
Meta introduced this feature to facilitate communication among individuals associated with educational institutions, companies, and neighborhoods. For instance, neighbors can create groups to discuss local events and security issues. Similarly, teachers can create groups to discuss student-related matters or share class information, allowing students to join these groups.
Enthusiasts of particular topics can also use these groups to discuss their interests with others. Although this feature operates similarly to WhatsApp’s Community tab, there are differences. Joining WhatsApp Communities requires a phone number, while Messenger Communities only require a Facebook account.
However, the feature is not yet available to everyone. It will be rolled out gradually to all accounts in various countries. Meta has advised users to exercise caution when using the Communities feature. Due to the large number of accounts that may be connected, it is recommended not to share personal messages within these groups and to be cautious while chatting.
